Abstract

This service provides access to NOTAM geospatial entities through multiple interfaces, including REST-based Feature Service.

It enables system-to-system exchange of structured feature-level data and map representations, supporting interoperable integration in SWIM-compliant environments.

Users can:

  • Query and retrieve vector features representing NOTAM information from the underlying spatial database.
  • Request on-demand NOTAM maps generated from the underlying spatial database

The service supports spatial and attribute-based filtering for features and provides map visualizations according to operational requirements.

Interaction follows standard request–response patterns:

  1. Clients send HTTP requests to the appropriate service endpoint (REST).
  2. The service processes the request and retrieves or generates the requested features or maps.
  3. Responses are returned as structured feature data (e.g., JSON, GeoJSON) or map graphics, ensuring efficient and reliable access.

The service facilitates accurate, up-to-date, and interoperable access to NOTAM  geospatial information, in line with the EUROCONTROL SWIM Technical Infrastructure (TI) Yellow Profile principles.

Operational Need

There is a growing need for digitally-structured NOTAM information to support modern, integrated flight information and briefing systems. Geospatial NOTAMs enable the automated interpretation and visualization of operational conditions notified within the aeronautical environment, ensuring common situational awareness and improving decision-making both during pre-flight preparation and in-flight operations. By providing machine-readable data that can be overlaid on aeronautical maps and other operational layers, geospatial NOTAMs facilitate the timely identification of infrastructure and airspace impacts, enhance safety, and support advanced applications such as trajectory-based operations, dynamic airspace management, and digital briefing solutions (e.g., ePIB and SWIM-enabled services).

Capabilities

The service provides NOTAM information, based on point features for NOTAMs without associated geography and polygon features for NOTAMs with associated geography (areas, airspace reservations, UAS operations).

Request geospatial NOTAM information

The service provides access to geospatial NOTAM data represented through point and polygon geospatial features. Users can query the NOTAM dataset to retrieve information relevant to aerodrome operations, airspace management, and flight planning.

Advanced filtering of NOTAM data

The service supports spatial and attribute-based filtering to return NOTAM according to user-defined criteria. Spatial filtering includes bounding-box and polygon-based queries. Attribute filtering enables selection by NOTAM identifier, aerodrome/FIR, effective/expiry time, Q-code, or operational category.

Real-time retrieval of NOTAM updates

The service allows on-demand access to current NOTAM data, ensuring up-to-date information for operational use. Responses are provided in standard machine-readable formats suitable for integration into briefing, situational awareness, and decision-support systems.

Service Access and Use Conditions

The Geospatial NOTAM Information Service is available upon request and subject to prior authorization, which must be obtained via email at [email protected]

Authorization is required to obtain authentication credentials.

Users may access, query, and retrieve aeronautical geospatial entities (points and polygons) related to NOTAM for operational, planning, and decision-support purposes.

NOTAM data may be freely used within the scope of their intended aeronautical and informational applications, in compliance with applicable intellectual property and operational regulations.

Automated or system-to-system access is supported without limitations regarding the type of user.

Confindentiality

The service ensures point-to-point confidentiality in accordance with the EUROCONTROL Specification for SWIM Technical Infrastructure (TI) Yellow Profile through the use of Transport Layer Security (TLS) version 1.2 or higher.

All communications between clients and the service endpoint occur over HTTPS, ensuring encrypted and tamper-resistant message exchange.

Integrity

The service ensures point-to-point integrity in accordance with the EUROCONTROL Specification for SWIM Technical Infrastructure (TI) Yellow Profile through the use of Transport Layer Security (TLS) version 1.2 or higher, preventing any undetected modification of data during transmission.

Capacity

The service is designed to handle operational demand, providing sufficient capacity to support concurrent users accessing the Geospatial NOTAM REST interface. It can process multiple simultaneous requests without performance degradation, ensuring timely retrieval of point- and polygon-based NOTAM features.

Response Time

The service returns NOTAM data within operationally acceptable timeframes for REST-based feature queries. Response performance is monitored to ensure users receive timely access to updated NOTAM information for operational and flight-planning needs.

Availability

The service is continuously available through its REST endpoint. High-availability measures support uninterrupted access to Geospatial NOTAM data, ensuring operational continuity.

Recoverability

In the event of a service disruption, the system is able to recover and resume normal operations promptly. Redundancy and integrity mechanisms are implemented to maintain service continuity and minimize impact on operational users.

Security

The service ensures point-to-point confidentiality in accordance with the EUROCONTROL SWIM TI Yellow Profile using TLS 1.2 or higher. All communications occur over HTTPS. The service ensures data integrity through TLS 1.2 or higher, preventing undetected modification of Geospatial NOTAM data during transmission.

The service provides NOTAM information through point and polygon feature layers, enabling the graphical display of aeronautical NOTAM data.

Point features are used for NOTAMs without associated geometry, while polygon features are used for NOTAMs with spatial extent (e.g., airspace areas, restricted zones, UAS operations).

The service is based on the ArcGIS REST Feature/Map Service interface and supports standard GIS query and visualization capabilities.

The EPSG:3857 and EPSG:102100 coordinate reference systems are used for the projection.
