Abstract

The Airspace Reservation Exchange Service (ARES) – Spain provides real-time tactical information on the status of airspace reservations managed by the Spanish LARA system (ENAIRE).

It enables authorized systems to access or subscribe to updates about the operational status of reserved airspace—such as active, pre-active or released—supporting situational awareness and collaborative decision-making across the European ATM network.

The service operates within the Flexible Use of Airspace (FUA) framework and complies with SWIM Yellow Profile specifications, ensuring interoperability and standardized information exchange with EUROCONTROL and other ATM stakeholders.

ENAIRE is the fourth most important European air traffic manager and is in a clear commitment to the Single Sky initiative. The company manages the Spanish airspace over a territory of 2.19 MN square kilometres. and provides air traffic services to 2.1 million flights to and from four continents (Europe, America, Asia and Africa), carrying 300 million passengers each year. Through five control centres, 21 control towers and a comprehensive network of aeronautical infrastructure and equipment, ENAIRE provides en-route, approach and aerodrome ATC services, as well as flight information, alerts and consulting services. ENAIRE is the communications, navigation and surveillance service provider across the whole of the Spanish airspace and at airports in Aena network.

The ARES Service meets the operational need for accurate and timely tactical information on the current status of airspace reservations in Spain.

During the ASM Level 3 (tactical phase), stakeholders require up-to-date information on whether airspace structures (TSAs, TRAs, CDRs, etc.) are active, pre-active, or released to support flight planning, ATFCM operations, and real-time civil-military coordination.

This service ensures that both national and European users have consistent, synchronized data on airspace availability.

Capabilities of the service

The service implemented is Request/Reply and enables:

  • Provision of real-time status updates for all airspace reservations managed in the Spanish LARA system.

  • Notification of transitions between states (e.g. pre-active → active → released).

  • Distribution of tactical airspace status data to external systems via SWIM.

  • Support for dynamic updates, ensuring that operational systems always reflect the current tactical situation.

Local Airspace Structure

This functionality provides external users with secure access to retrieve comprehensive data on airspace structures and associated activities from within the ASM Support System, ensuring accurate and timely information for operational and planning purposes.

Airspace Status

This capability enables external users to securely retrieve activation status maintained within the ASM Support System, ensuring accurate and timely information to support operational decision-making and airspace management processes.

Security constraint

All connections to the service require mutual authentication through a client digital certificate issued by ENAIRE.

Interested organizations must formally request the issuance of this certificate from ENAIRE prior to being granted access.

The exclusive access network for the ARE Service is NEWPENS (New Pan-European Network Service).

Connections via any other network are not permitted.

Access is managed under the SWIM security and governance framework, ensuring confidentiality, integrity, and traceability of all exchanged information.

Authentication and authorisation

The authentication is based on mutual TLS and requires all users to request using an X.509 certificate. The service support TLS 1.3

The integrity is ensured by TLS encryption

Availability

The ARES Service guarantees real-time performance optimized for tactical operations, ensuring high reliability with an availability rate of at least 99%.

Service monitoring and redundancy within LARA ensure high operational continuity and responsiveness.

Performance

Monitoring tools continuously track system health, latency, and request volumes, allowing early detection of anomalies and supporting proactive performance tuning. Overall, the service provides a robust and responsive interface that supports operational environments requiring real-time or near real-time data exchange.
