The Airspace Reservation Exchange Service (ARES) Ireland provides real-time tactical information on the status of airspace reservations managed by the Irish LARA system (AirNav Ireland). It enables authorised systems to access or subscribe to updates about the operational status of reserved airspace, such as active, pre-active or released, supporting situational awareness and collaborative decision-making across the European ATM network. The service operates within the Flexible Use of Airspace (FUA) framework and complies with SWIM Yellow Profile specifications, ensuring interoperability and standardised information exchange with EUROCONTROL and other ATM stakeholders.

Business context
The ARES Service meets the operational need for accurate and timely tactical information on the current status of airspace reservations in Ireland.During the ASM Level 3 (tactical phase), stakeholders require up-to-date information on whether airspace structures (TSAs, TRAs, CDRs, etc.) are active, pre-active, or released to support flight planning, ATFCM operations, and real-time civil-military coordination. This service ensures that both national and European users have consistent, synchronised data on airspace availability.
Capabilities of the service
The service implemented is Request/Reply and enables:Provision of real-time status updates for all airspace reservations managed in the Irish LARA system.Notification of transitions between states (e.g. pre-active â active â released).Distribution of tactical airspace status data to external systems via SWIM.Support for dynamic updates, ensuring that operational systems always reflect the current tactical situation.
Management of subscriptions
Allows for creation, starting, stopping and deletion of subscriptions to consume data from the service.
Creation, starting, stopping and deletion of subscriptions
Publication
Enables the management of updates based on subscriptions by External Users.
Notifying an External User of a change in the data according to the subscription topics that have been subscribed to.
Local airspace structure
Allows for retrieval of airspace structures and activity data from within the ASM Support System by External Users.
Obtaining access to static data and activity data by External Users from within the ASM Support System.
Airspace status
Enables the retrieval of activation data held within the ASM Support System by External Users.
Obtaining access to the activation data held within the ASM Support System by External Users.

PerformanceMonitoring tools track system health, latency, and request volumes, allowing early detection of anomalies and supporting proactive performance tuning.
-
AvailabilityTarget values: Availability of 99.7% outside planned outages.
-
Confidentiality and IntegrityAuthentication and confidentiality is ensured by mTLS
-
Security constraintAll connections to the service require mutual authentication through a client digital certificate issued by AirNav Ireland. Interested organisations must formally request the issuance of this certificate from AirNav Ireland prior to being granted access.
-
Authentication and authorisationThe authentication is based on mutual TLS and requires all users to request using an X.509 certificate. The service support TLS 1.3
-
ConfidentialityCommunications (HTTPS and AMQPS) are secured using TLS
-
IntegrityCommunication integrity is ensured by TLS encryption.
SELF_VALIDATION
The services have not been validated yet.
ARES
The ARES service supports the tactical phase (ASM Level 3) of the Flexible Use of Airspace (FUA) concept. It enables dynamic monitoring and publication of airspace reservation status, enhancing coordination and situational awareness for all ATM stakeholders at national and European levels.
